The true story of how a 5 year old Indian boy became separated from his mother and brother and was then placed in an orphanage before being adopted by an Australian couple. As a 25 year old he seeks out his lost family. Starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman in BAFTA winning performances.

23 October THE DRESSMAKER (2015) 119 mins

The runaway winner of our Members’ Choice vote, this film stars Kate Winslet as a femme fatale who returns to her rural home town in Australia to right the wrongs of the past. A stylish drama with comic undertones about love and revenge.

13 November FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS (2016) 111 mins

Meryl Streep in the eponymous role with Hugh Grant as her supportive partner light up this comedy about an heiress who wants to perform at Carnegie Hall, New York. Both funny and touching.

27 November UP (2009) 96mins

A Pixar /Walt Disney animation which is far too good for children! It has stunning visual effects for a story about a grumpy old widower who fulfils his ambition to travel to South America – but with a boy scout stowaway for company. An adventure tale but one which engages adult themes of friendship, aspiration and tackling adversity.

An old style musical starring Shirley MacLaine as Charity,a dancer for hire in a sleazy ballroom . She has endless disappointments in her life but is optimistic and hopes she will at last find true love. Directed with panache by Bob Fosse and featuring songs like Big Spender, If my Friends could see me now, and Rhythm of Life.

22 January CHAPLIN (1992) 143 mins

This film biography follows the life of Charlie Chaplin from his impoverished boyhood to his Hollywood triumphs via the troubles and controversies in which he became embroiled during his career. Robert Downey Jnr in the starring role gives a memorable performance.

5 February THEIR FINEST (2017) 117 mins

This is a comedy /romance/drama set in World War II London about the making of a propaganda film by members of a team at the Ministry of Information . Starring Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy amongst a host of British acting talent.

12 February THE GREAT GATSBY (2013) 143 mins

A recent remake of the adaptation of the famous F. Scott Fitzgerald novel , this is a drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby and Toby Maguire as his neighbour who comes to see that behind Gatsby’s lavish lifestyle lurks obsession , madness and tragedy .

12 March TRADING PLACES (1983) 116 mins

This is a classic comedy starring Eddie Murphy as a street con artist and Dan Aykroyd as a rich commodities broker whose lives are turned upside down as a result of a bet. A satire on the “greed is good“ mentality of the

1980s.

26 March LA LA LAND (2017) 128 mins

Not a musical in the normal sense but rather an old school romantic drama which happens to include some songs and music along the way. Deserved winner of 6 Oscars, the film stars Ryan Gosling as a struggling pianist and Emma Stone as an aspiring actress / playwright who both want to succeed in their chosen career paths.
